What the One Skill Retake actually is
The One Skill Retake lets you resit a single component of IELTS - Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking - instead of the full four-skill exam, provided you took your original test on the computer-delivered format. Your new Test Report Form combines your retaken skill's score with your original scores from the other three skills, and includes an overall CEFR level. It's available for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.
The retaken skill runs under the exact same format and timing as it would in a full test - a Writing retake is still two tasks under the standard 60-minute limit, a Speaking retake is still a full face-to-face interview. There's no shortcut on difficulty, only on how much of the exam you have to repeat.
The rules, in full
- You must have taken your original test on the computer-delivered format to be eligible.
- The retake must happen within 60 days of your original test date.
- You get one retake attempt per original test - if you need to try that skill again after the retake, you're back to booking a full exam.
- Only one skill can be retaken per application; you can't combine, say, a Writing retake and a Speaking retake into a single booking.
- Your final Test Report Form shows your retaken skill's new score alongside your original scores for the other three.

When it's genuinely worth it
The One Skill Retake earns its cost when three conditions line up:
You're solid on three skills and isolated on one. If Listening, Reading and Speaking all met or exceeded your target, and only Writing pulled you under, that's the textbook case. Retaking three skills you've already demonstrated competence in adds cost and time for no real benefit.
The gap is small and explainable. A single fixable issue - running out of time on Task 2, under-developing your Speaking Part 2 answer, misreading one question type consistently - is a strong candidate for a One Skill Retake, because it points to a narrow, addressable problem rather than a broader skill gap.
Your receiving institution accepts a combined Test Report Form. Most universities and immigration authorities do, since it's now a standard, officially issued IELTS document. Still, if you're applying somewhere with unusually specific requirements, confirm they'll accept a report combining an original sitting with a retaken skill before you rely on this route.
When a full retake makes more sense
The One Skill Retake isn't the right call in every case:
If more than one skill missed target. The whole point of the option is a single, isolated gap. If two or more skills came in under target, you need broader preparation, not a narrow retake - and the rules only allow retaking one skill per original test anyway.
If the shortfall reflects a genuine skill gap, not a one-off slip. A Writing score that's consistently 1+ bands below target across multiple practice tests usually means the underlying skill needs real development, not just a second attempt at the same test under the same conditions. Retaking without addressing the actual gap tends to produce the same result.
If your 60-day window has already passed, or is about to. Once you're past 60 days from your original test date, the One Skill Retake option disappears entirely and a full retake is your only path forward - so if you're on the edge of that window, book quickly or plan for a full resit instead.
How to book it
You book a One Skill Retake the same way you'd book any IELTS test - directly through the British Council or IDP, referencing your original Test Report Form number. Availability depends on the test centre and skill, so check your local centre's calendar as soon as you get your original results if you think you'll need it, rather than waiting until close to the 60-day cutoff.
